Daly City

Called the "Gateway to the Peninsula", Daly City is located on San Mateo County's northern edge. The limits of the city stretch from the San Fransisco Bay which is east of the city all the way to the pacific Ocean on the west. It is conveniently located in the middle of two of the biggest job growth zones within California, the San Mateo and San Fransisco counties. Though the economy within the area is extremely diverse, the main sectors are within retail, healthcare, and small business.

The retail sector makes up most of the financial system of Daly City. Within its limits, there are three major shopping places, the biggest of those is the Serramonte Center, having a total of 860,000 square feet of retail space. The Mission Street retail corridor, that borders San Francisco, and the Westlake shopping centre (that provides 620,000 square feet of retail space) are the two other major regional shopping areas. The city has over 3.1 million square feet of retail space, and out of all the cities in the county Daly City has the biggest taxable retail sales.

In Daly City, the second largest sector of the financial system is the medical industry. The Seton Medical Center is the biggest employer within the city, with roughly 1,500 workers. There are 357 beds within the hospital, and it holds the reputation for being one of the leading medical facilities in the United States. There are several other medical institutions in the area, like for instance the San Fransisco heart Institute, San Fransisco Neuro-Skeletal Imaging Center, Physician's Medical center, Seton Medical Office, and the Spine Care Medical Group. The most recent facility in the area is the Kaiser Permanente, which consists of 130,000 square feet of medical clinics and offices. It could be found at 395 Hickey Boulevard near the I-280.

The labour force within the area is generally well educated due to the nearness of educational institutes. In a ten mile radius are six universities or colleges and an additional twelve more can be found within a 50-mile radius.

The population of Daly City is mainly over the age of 18, 78 percent with the median age being roughly thirty five. Surprisingly, only 12% of the population is more than 60. Virtually 50% of the total labor force work in local jobs.
