Orange is a beautiful city located in the middle of Orange County. The city's thirty eight square miles hosts a population of about 138,640. The city has a "Sphere of Influence" of about 55 square miles. In this sphere of influence lies more than 18,500 acres of undeveloped land, that is currently owned by the Irvine Company. Los Angeles lies about thirty two miles northwest of Orange.
The city was established by Alfred Chapman and Andrew Glassell, both of which were lawyers, during the year 1869. As opposed to cash, they were givenaccepted over 1285 acres of land from the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana as legal fees. They first created a large, 40 acre centre town location called the Plaza and next started to lay out 10 acre farm lots all around it. Today, the Plaza remains the symbol of the community and the centre of the town. There are various buildings and houses in the area that have lasted the test of time, among which are registered on the national registry of historic places. The city was officially incorporated on the 6th of April, the year 1888.
As for government, the city chooses a new mayor every couple of years. There are four council members who are elected to four year terms but are alternated every two years. The city council chooses the City Manager, who is the administrative official of the city.
The city provides various amenities and services to its residents. The major places of safety (like for example police, fire, emergency transportation and paramedics) are all covered by the city, as are recreation places consisting of parks and the library. The senior citizen center is a private agency which is contracted with the city. Orange is kept up to date as far as street improvements and lighting are concerned. The city operates its own water utility in the city.
