Driving a forklift is much more complex than driving a car. A forklift driver should be really skilled and trained in the operation of a forklift. Operating a forklift requires a high level of concentration. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reports that 85 people die in forklift-related mishaps each and every year year. About 35,000 people are hurt each year in mishaps related to lift trucks. Nearly 50 percent of operator deaths result from a lift truck tip over.

In order to prevent tip overs, it is vital that drivers know how to correctly estimate load weight. In the construction business, the weight of a load is often posted right on the load. If the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks and a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, the whole weight of the load will be about 1,360 kilograms. When a load is wet, the operator would need to take additional weight into consideration.

It is dangerous for drivers to make poorly informed estimations regarding the real weight of the load and whether the lift truck could handle it. If a driver cannot be certain about the load weight, he must ask for help from the supervisor.

Another cause of tip overs is failure to pull up close enough to a building to lift or place a load with an extended boom. It is vital to use the load chart to prevent tipping the lift truck. Even when a forklift does not really tip over, a mishap has occurred when the back wheels come off the ground. This means the forklift limitations have been exceeded. Even if damage may not be obvious, the rear axle can have sustained damaged when hitting the ground.

Lift trucks may even tip when not carrying a load. An unloaded forklift could tip if an operator has placed a load on scaffolding utilizing an extended boom. If the driver reverses the forklift and turns suddenly while bringing the boom down, the center of gravity would be pushed to the edges of the forklift and could result in a tip over. A driver should always utilize the joysticks to lower and retract the fork.
