The forklift or lift truck is a powered machinery used most frequently for the transporting and lifting of goods and supplies in industrial and warehouse settings. These machines are normally used in the dockside, warehousing, mining and construction applications.

The forklift can be called by a lot of different names, depending on their functions. A few different examples of these names are: stacker trucks, lift trucks, trailer loaders and fork trucks. These types of equipment are used all around the world, mainly in the warehousing and manufacturing industry.

In the mid 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the very first forklifts made their debut in the building of the Pennsylvania railroad during the year 1906. At that time, platform trucks were launched to help in the transportation of products. These very first platform trucks run on batteries. The trucks regained their popularity in WWI when extreme labor shortages occurred due to all the enlisted men. This is when forklifts truly arrived on the market to stay.

For forklifts, there are essentially 2 types: ones that handle light loads and the ones that deal with heavier cargo. Lighter units would include: side loaders, towing tractors, hand pallet trucks and walkie starters. These machines are meant for handling lighter cargo and they are not ideal for extremely heavy cargo. The equipment's specific load capacity is posted on the machinery itself and in the owner's guidebook. A few examples of the big truck types consist of: truck mounted forklifts, telescopic handlers and walkie order picking trucks.

There are a range of different kinds of forklifts available and a lot of different variations of capacity and load. Most of the time within warehouse applications, the lighter versions is used. Bigger models are often seen within the shipping business. Certain units have a tilting mast to make the load bend in order to counteract any slipping.

The majority of forklift models with have rear steering wheels because this specific design aspect helps to increase the maneuverability of the equipment. Additionally, this steering manner comes in really useful when operating around corners. These machinery could be unstable due to their varying centers of gravity. It is a very good idea to avoid negotiating sharp corners.

Yet another kind includes specialized forklifts. These machinery would include explosion proof trucks and articulated counterbalance trucks. The explosion proof trucks are utilized in environments and factories which deal with flammable supplies.
