Personal Qualities
It is necessary for a forklift driver to have basic writing and reading skills. Furthermore, the forklift operator must be physically fit and could comfortably lift 30 pounds. They need to be physically able to use a forklift; hence, they require the physical ability of utilizing both feet, both arms and both hands. The forklift driver must ideally be able to stand for an 8 hour shift. In nearly all work settings, they will be entitled to two short coffee breaks and a half-hour lunch break during the day. It is very important that the forklift driver not be prone to reckless driving or rage of any sort.
Training
Often, forklift training is completed on the job. This training covers safety training and control training, which is done through tests, and a series of videos. A performance test will also be done on the lift truck. When the tests have been successfully done, a license could be issued. This license should be renewed according to shop procedures and according to state and provincial laws. If you get the chance to complete your forklift training on the job, it is a great idea and it is one more skill you could include in your resume.
